Leading food redistribution charities merge for greater impact

Two leading surplus food redistribution charities, FareShare and The Felix Project, have confirmed plans to merge to strengthen their national impact on food waste and food insecurity.

By forming one ‘bigger, bolder’ charity, the two organizations hope to extend their reach and increase their impact on UK food insecurity figures, which show that around one in seven people face food scarcity whilst 4.6 million tonnes of food are wasted annually.

With demand for food rising and eight in ten charities admitting they are unable to keep up, the pair hope that combining forces will result in more rescued food reaching a wider network of people who need it the most. The charities also believe that the merger will give them a stronger voice when campaigning and influencing national policy on food waste.

“We’re stronger together,” the charities say in a statement. “By joining forces, we’ll unlock more food, more funding and more influence. Combining FareShare’s national network and deep regional infrastructure with The Felix Project’s innovation and agility, our new, unified charity will speak with one voice and help build a fairer, stronger food system — strengthening ties from farmers and suppliers to the grocery industry — so we can waste less, feed more and support the people who need us most.”

Both charities will continue operating under their current names while the merger is implemented in phases; eventually, the new charity will adopt the Felix name and undergo a brand refresh.
