Introduction of much-anticipated new food safety law took centre stage at this year’s Free From Food Awards.

The Benedict Blythe Foundation received the 2026 Free From Hero Award in recognition of its role driving forward new legislation coming into force this September. Benedict's Law introduces a set of national protections designed to improve allergy safety for children in schools, ensuring staff are equipped with the knowledge and tools to respond quickly in emergencies.

The 19th annual awards, held in Kensington, London, on Thursday 11 June, also saw top prizes going to long-standing producer Schar, which scooped Large Brand of the Year for excellence across the majority of its entries – and Warburtons Gluten Free, whose new flatbreads scooped a gold alongside its tiger bloomer. Smaller independent brands also performed strongly, with My Gluten Free Bakery and Dilightful each taking home four awards, alongside Small Brand of the Year and Micro Brand of the Year, respectively.

‘A clear market gap and genuine innovation bringing free-from into mainstream’ earned Borough 22’s Yum Yum the Food Product of the Year accolade, while M&S Made Without Gluten Free Colin the Caterpillar won Retailer Product of the Year.

Innovation in drinks was recognized with gold awards for Barhi’s Date-Based Spiced Mead and Wine That’s Fruit, and Aqua Glow’s Mango Passion winning Drink Awards’ Product of The Year.

Tesco retained its title as Retailer of the Year, reflecting the breadth and accessibility of its free-from range.

Commenting on the evening, awards’ CEO Cressida Langlands says: “Benedict’s Law will be a step change for the allergic community in the way that Natasha’s Law was and continues to be. The incredible standard of tonight’s winners demonstrates just how vital a benchmark these awards remain.

“For 19 years we have guided and celebrated this sector and as we gear up for our momentous 20th anniversary next year, the energy, inclusivity and brilliant innovation we’ve seen tonight proves that the free-from industry is stronger, safer and more delicious than ever.”
