Organic winners celebrated at BOOM Awards
The breadth and vibrancy of British-produced organic products were on full display last week as the industry turned out in force to celebrate the finalists and winners of the 2025 BOOM Awards at Bristol’s Paintworks event space, hosted by Soil Association Certification.
The event featured more categories than ever before, including the new Ocado Roots Award which went to Wild Thingz shortly after its Organic Fruit Flyers Gummy Sweets were also crowned Best New Food and Drink Product. Speaking to Natural Brands Magazine at the event, Wild Thingz founder Fliss Newland spoke of being ‘in total shock’ after learning that the retailer had proceeded to list her vegan, organic, low-sugar sweets online two weeks before announcing the brand’s award. “We weren’t expecting this. We were entered into ‘Best New’, we knew that, and we were really hopeful to win it obviously — so we were buzzing about that. And then with the Ocado Roots Awards, we had no idea that we were part of it. I’m still in shock. It’s epic.”
Wild Thingz’ Fruit Flyers were met with resoundingly positive feedback from judges, including chef and author Xanthe Clay who called them ‘the most delicious little sweet bits of nonsense to give your kids’. Its Zesty Pests SKU received similarly strong comments from judges at the Free-From Food Awards in June, where they were awarded ‘Bronze’.
Also victorious at the BOOMs was Amie Martin, founder of Granola Fan Club, who scooped the award for Best Cereals and Morning Goods with her Hemp, Honey and Mulberry Organic Granola. As a newcomer to the organic food sector Martin calls the accolade an ‘immense validation’ for her hard work and commitment to organic. “It’s recognition that doing it well and doing it properly is worth it. To be around this new food industry and to be a newcomer and accepted and to be a winner is pretty epic.” Having received a large order from Planet Organic last week, this small start-up now celebrates ‘a massive double win’. “Going from getting the Planet Organic order two or three days ago to winning this award in the same week — I’m very excited.”
Local business Better Food also beat the competition to take home the Best Organic Retailer award, with founder Phil Haughton commenting: “I was completely gobsmacked. I really, genuinely thought this was not for us tonight. This is a real accolade because the last four years have been so tough that we’ve been focusing on bottom line, trying to keep the business alive and at times thinking ‘Are we going to make it?’ and you forget that you are actually having a very positive impact in the organic movement. Community Farm rocks and I’m really sorry that they didn’t get it, but I’m also really chuffed that we got it!”
